Katherine Gray, Christy Oralls & Paisley Wood killed in fatal House Fire in Dryden

DRYDEN, N.Y. — A tragic house fire in the Town of Dryden has left a community reeling after two women and a young child lost their lives Wednesday morning. The devastating blaze occurred at 321 Cortland Road, leaving families and neighbors grieving the sudden loss of loved ones.

Authorities identified the victims as 31-year-old Katherine Gray, 30-year-old Christy Oralls, and Oralls’ 3-year-old daughter, Paisley Wood. A fourth individual, 54-year-old David Welch, was transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse with injuries but was listed in stable condition. Welch is the uncle of both Gray and Oralls. His wife was not home at the time of the fire.

Investigators explained that Welch and his wife rented the property, where they lived alongside Oralls and her daughter. Gray, also Welch’s niece, was visiting from Whitney Point when the fire broke out. First responders were called to the scene at approximately 10:08 a.m. after receiving reports of a structure fire along the 300 block of Cortland Road, also known as State Route 13.

The fire caused severe damage to the home, with much of the destruction concentrated at the rear of the residence. Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the flames and ensure no one else remained inside. Route 13 was closed for several hours between Freeville Road in Dryden and Gulf Hill Road in Virgil as crews battled the fire and conducted a thorough search of the property.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, officials had not determined the cause of the fire, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are carefully examining the scene to understand how the blaze started and spread so rapidly. Sheriff Derek Osborne emphasized the need for a careful investigation given the tragic loss of life.

“Our hearts are with the family and everyone affected by this devastating fire,” Sheriff Osborne said. “On behalf of the Sheriff’s Office, we extend our deepest condolences. This is a heartbreaking loss for our community.” Residents of Dryden are mourning the victims while first responders and investigators continue their work to uncover the circumstances behind this tragic event.
