DRYDEN, N.Y. — The Dryden community is grieving after a tragic house fire claimed the lives of Christy Oralls, 30, and her 3-year-old daughter, Paisley Wood, on Wednesday morning. The devastating blaze at 321 Cortland Road has left friends, family, and neighbors reeling from the sudden and heartbreaking loss.
According to the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, first responders were called to the 300 block of Cortland Road, also known as State Route 13, at approximately 10:08 a.m. after reports of a structure fire. Emergency crews arrived to find the home already heavily engulfed in flames, with significant damage concentrated toward the rear of the residence.
Inside the home, Christy Oralls and her young daughter were tragically found and pronounced deceased. Their sudden deaths have left a deep sense of loss among family members, highlighting the devastating impact of the fire on a young family. Both mother and child were taken far too soon, leaving loved ones struggling to process the tragedy.
A fourth individual, 54-year-old David Welch, Christy’s uncle, was also inside the home during the fire. He was transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse and listed in stable condition. Welch and his wife rented the home and lived there with Christy and Paisley. His wife was not home at the time of the fire.
Firefighters worked diligently to contain the blaze, and multiple agencies assisted in battling the flames. Route 13 was closed for several hours between Freeville Road in Dryden and Gulf Hill Road in Virgil while crews extinguished the fire and conducted a search of the damaged property. As of late Wednesday afternoon, authorities said the cause of the fire remained under investigation.
Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne expressed his condolences, saying, “Our hearts are with the family, and everyone affected by this devastating fire. On behalf of the Sheriff’s Office, we extend our deepest condolences. This is a heartbreaking loss for our community.” As the investigation continues, the Dryden community mourns the loss of Christy Oralls and Paisley Wood, honoring their memory and grappling with the shock of this tragic event.
