58-year-old Bicyclist, Michael Ouellet Killed in Late-Night Crash in Cranston

CRANSTON, R.I. — A Cranston neighborhood is in shock following a tragic crash Monday night that claimed the life of a 58-year-old man. Authorities say the victim, who was walking his bicycle in the roadway, was struck by a vehicle, leaving the community searching for answers and grieving the sudden loss.

According to the Cranston Police Department, officers responded to reports of a person down near the intersection of Wellington Avenue and Well Avenue. When first responders arrived, they found an adult male suffering from serious injuries. Emergency personnel rushed him to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment, but he was later pronounced dead. The victim has been identified as Michael Ouellet, 58.

Preliminary findings indicate that Ouellet was walking his black-and-white mountain bike with reflectors along the roadway at the time of the crash. Investigators say he was struck by a vehicle traveling in the same direction. The bicycle sustained damage consistent with being hit from behind, and authorities are reviewing the scene to better understand how the incident unfolded.

The driver involved has been identified as 21-year-old Kelvin Santana of Cranston. Police say Santana initially left the scene but later returned and has been cooperating with the investigation. The vehicle involved sustained visible damage and was taken to Cranston Police Headquarters for further examination. Authorities have not indicated any criminal charges at this time, noting the investigation remains active.

Police stated that impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash based on early assessments. However, investigators noted that the area was poorly lit, with several non-functioning streetlights, and light snow flurries were reported at the time. These environmental factors, along with the roadway conditions, will be carefully reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact the Cranston Police Department Traffic Unit. Detectives say public tips can be valuable in helping clarify the events leading up to the crash. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available, and the community continues to mourn the loss of Michael Ouellet.
