Band of Oz Singer Howard Winstead Killed in I-95 Crash

The music world is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Howard Douglas Winstead, 67, a beloved figure in the Carolina Beach Music scene, who was killed early Saturday morning in a tragic crash in Harnett County. Winstead, a resident of Concord, was widely known as the lead vocalist and trumpeter for the legendary group Band of Oz.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred just before 2:06 a.m. along Interstate 95 northbound near Exit 73 in the Dunn area. Authorities say Winstead was driving a 2019 Chrysler van when it rear-ended a Peterbilt gasoline tanker in the far left lane of the interstate.

Emergency crews with Dunn Emergency Services responded quickly to the scene and found Winstead trapped inside the vehicle. Despite efforts by firefighters and paramedics to rescue him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The collision forced the closure of northbound lanes for several hours, causing major delays before reopening around 5:48 a.m.

Investigators say the circumstances leading up to the crash remain unclear. Trooper Christopher McIntosh is handling the case, and officials are continuing to examine what may have caused the fatal collision. No additional details have been released at this time.

Winstead’s death has sent shockwaves through the Carolina Beach Music community, where he was deeply respected for his talent and dedication. He was a member of the Carolina Beach Music Awards and had been inducted into its Hall of Fame. Known for his passion on stage, Winstead once shared that performing with Band of Oz was where he felt happiest.

Reports indicate that members of the band were traveling in separate vehicles after a performance in Lexington, South Carolina, when the crash occurred. Winstead also previously performed with The Fantastic Shakers and The Blackwater Band. As tributes begin to pour in, friends and fellow musicians are remembering him not only for his music, but for the lasting impact he made on everyone around him.
