The Beach City, Ohio community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 21-year-old Cole Scholey, whose life was tragically cut short following a devastating head-on crash Saturday morning on U.S. Route 62 in Perry Township. Family members, friends, and loved ones are now left struggling to process the sudden tragedy that claimed the life of a young man remembered by many as someone with his whole future ahead of him.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the fatal collision occurred around 7:15 a.m. near milepost 11. Investigators reported that Scholey was driving a 2019 Ford Ranger northbound when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle traveled left of center into the southbound lane. The Ford Ranger then collided head-on with a 2021 Honda Odyssey driven by 56-year-old Kelly Kemp of Massillon, resulting in a violent impact that caused catastrophic damage to both vehicles.
Emergency crews rushed to the crash scene and worked quickly to assist those involved. Authorities said Kelly Kemp tragically died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision. Cole Scholey suffered critical injuries and was transported by emergency responders to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Despite efforts by doctors and medical staff to save his life, Scholey later succumbed to his injuries.
Officials also confirmed that a juvenile passenger riding inside Kemp’s vehicle suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to Aultman Hospital for treatment. The condition of the child has not been fully released, but the tragedy has left many throughout the community praying for recovery and healing for everyone affected by the devastating collision.
Investigators noted that neither driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Troopers also stated that speed is believed to have been a contributing factor as authorities continue examining roadway evidence, vehicle damage, and witness statements to determine exactly what led to the fatal left-of-center crash. The investigation remains active as officials work to piece together the events that unfolded that tragic morning.
As loved ones grieve, the Beach City community continues reflecting on the painful loss of Cole Scholey, whose life ended far too soon. Friends and family members are remembering him through cherished memories, shared laughter, and the moments that made him special to those who knew him best.
