Authorities identified the victims as 9-year-old Royce Sims, 5-year-old Artavius Sims, and 19-year-old Raniah Simpson. A fourth child, 7-year-old Terrion, survived the crash but remains in critical condition after suffering severe injuries. He was airlifted to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where doctors continue to provide emergency care.

Investigators said the crash happened on southbound I-65 about one mile south of Ridge Road when a Ford Explorer, driven by 31-year-old Renee Foster of Gary, allegedly struck the rear of a disabled semi-truck parked on the right shoulder. Police reported that the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of impact.

The force of the collision caused catastrophic damage to the vehicle, with emergency responders confirming that three of the children inside the SUV died at the scene. Authorities also said one of the victims was ejected from the vehicle due to the severity of the crash, highlighting the violent nature of the impact.

Foster reportedly told investigators she may have fallen asleep while driving before the crash occurred. She sustained upper-body injuries and was transported to Franciscan Health Crown Point for treatment. Officials confirmed the semi-truck driver was not injured in the collision.

According to Indiana State Police, multiple felony charges have been recommended to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office, including neglect of a dependent, reckless driving, and child restraint violations. Toxicology results are still pending as the investigation continues. As families mourn, investigators are working to reconstruct the final moments leading up to the tragedy that has left an entire community grieving.
