Edinburg Woman Charged After Two Children Found Dead in Burning Vehicle in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A deeply tragic investigation is unfolding in San Antonio after two children were discovered dead inside a burning vehicle early Friday morning, leading to the arrest of 34-year-old Marlene Vidal of Edinburg on capital murder charges. The heartbreaking case has left the community shaken as authorities work to determine exactly what led to the deaths of the young victims.

According to San Antonio police, officers and firefighters responded between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. to reports of a vehicle fire in the 500 block of Richland Hills Drive, located behind a warehouse area. Emergency crews arrived to find the vehicle engulfed in flames and immediately began working to extinguish the fire.

After the flames were brought under control, responders made the devastating discovery of two deceased children inside the burned vehicle. Investigators believe the victims were approximately 5 and 7 years old, though officials said formal identification is still pending through the medical examiner’s office.

San Antonio Assistant Police Chief Jesus Salame Jr. confirmed during a press briefing that Marlene Vidal was present at the scene when authorities arrived. She was later taken into custody and formally charged with capital murder in connection with the children’s deaths. Officials have not yet publicly clarified the relationship between Vidal and the victims.

Investigators said early evidence gathered in the case includes surveillance video, physical evidence recovered from the scene, and statements attributed to Vidal. Authorities stated that the information collected so far has led detectives to believe Vidal is solely responsible for the deaths. Police also noted that mental health concerns may be a factor under review as the investigation continues.

“This is a deeply tragic case, and our focus is finding the truth and seeking justice for these children,” Salame said. Detectives continue interviewing family members and witnesses while working to reconstruct the timeline leading up to the fire. Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active as the San Antonio community mourns the heartbreaking loss of two young lives.
