Child Survives, Suspect Killed After Violent Abduction Attempt at Omaha Walmart

The Omaha Police Department is actively investigating a critical officer-involved incident that unfolded Tuesday morning in Omaha, leaving a 31-year-old woman dead and a young child injured. The shocking confrontation occurred outside a Walmart and has left the community searching for answers.

According to officials, officers with the Uniform Patrol Bureau responded around 9:13 a.m. on April 14, 2026, to an emergency call at the Walmart located at 1606 S. 72nd Street. The initial 911 caller reportedly requested police assistance but stopped providing details. A second caller then alerted authorities about a woman armed with a large kitchen knife accompanied by a young child.

When officers arrived, they encountered Noemi Guzman near the southern parking lot area, standing beside a shopping cart with a 3-year-old boy inside. Investigators say Guzman was armed and making threats while officers repeatedly ordered her to drop the weapon. Despite multiple commands, she refused to comply, creating a tense and dangerous situation.

Authorities say the situation escalated when Guzman allegedly cut the child during the encounter. In response, officers discharged their service weapons, striking her. Officers immediately attempted life-saving measures, but Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind grief and many unanswered questions.

The child was quickly removed from the cart by a guardian and a bystander, who provided aid before emergency crews arrived. He was later transported to Children’s Hospital, where officials say his injuries are not life-threatening. His survival has brought a measure of relief amid an otherwise tragic situation.

Investigators later determined through surveillance footage that Guzman allegedly took the knife from inside the store before confronting the child and guardian. Footage shows her forcing them through the aisles and into the parking lot prior to police arrival. The case is being reviewed by multiple agencies, including the Nebraska State Patrol, along with Douglas and Sarpy County Sheriff’s Offices.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer praised the officers’ actions, stating they responded with professionalism and decisive action to protect the child. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, as required by policy, while the investigation continues. Authorities are urging anyone with information or video footage to come forward as the community continues to process the disturbing events.
