Family of Three, Including Teen Student, Killed in fatal Birmingham House Fire

A heartbreaking tragedy struck a west Birmingham neighborhood early Wednesday morning when a fast-moving house fire claimed the lives of an 18-year-old girl and her parents. The devastating incident has left the community in shock, as neighbors and loved ones mourn a family lost in a matter of hours.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Edward Hicks III, 49, his wife, Farintina Pleshette Hicks, 48, and their daughter, Laila Nicole Hicks, 18. Laila was a senior at Ramsay IB High School, and her sudden death has deeply affected classmates, teachers, and the entire school community.

In a statement, Birmingham City Schools expressed sorrow over the loss. “Birmingham City Schools is deeply saddened by the passing of Laila Hicks,” the statement read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.” The district also announced that grief counseling services are being made available to students and staff at the school.

According to Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, crews were dispatched just after 2 a.m. to a one-story brick home in the 6600 block of Avenue K in the Green Acres community. A neighbor called 911 after spotting flames coming from the house. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire already pouring from the home.

Despite their quick response, all three family members were critically injured. They were rushed to UAB Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. Officials said the fire spread quickly, leaving little chance for escape as it tore through the residence in the early morning hours.

Fire officials later revealed that there were no working smoke detectors inside the home, a factor that may have contributed to the tragic outcome. Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the fire. Meanwhile, the Birmingham community continues to grieve the loss of a family remembered for their love, with many honoring Laila as a bright young woman whose future was cut short too soon.
