The city of Omaha is grappling with shock and fear after a violent incident at a Walmart store left a young child injured and a suspect dead. Authorities say 31-year-old Noemi Guzman was fatally shot by police after allegedly attacking a 3-year-old boy during an attempted abduction Tuesday morning.
According to the Omaha Police Department, officers were dispatched around 9:20 a.m. to the Walmart near 72nd and Pine streets after receiving a call requesting immediate police assistance. When officers arrived, they located Guzman near the southern parking lot entrance, standing beside a shopping cart with the child inside.
Investigators say Guzman was armed with a knife and making repeated threats. Officers gave several commands for her to drop the weapon, but she refused to comply. During the tense and rapidly unfolding situation, officials say Guzman cut the young boy, escalating the danger and forcing officers to act quickly.
Police reported that two officers discharged their service weapons, striking Guzman. As the scene unfolded, a caretaker and a bystander rushed in, pulling the injured child from the cart and providing aid.
