35-year-old Zachary McKechnie Killed After Car Rolls Off Road in Penobscot

A quiet Saturday evening in Penobscot, Maine, turned tragic after a single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a 35-year-old Bucksport man. The fatal accident has left family, friends, and the local community grieving as authorities continue to investigate what led to the devastating crash.

According to a press release from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, the crash occurred on March 21, 2026, at approximately 7:46 p.m. The Hancock Regional Communications Center received reports of a serious single-vehicle accident on Front Ridge Road, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Officials said the vehicle involved was a black 2003 Volkswagen Jetta, which suffered severe and disabling damage. First responders arrived quickly at the scene and found the driver, identified as Zachary McKechnie of Bucksport, with critical injuries following the crash.

Authorities confirmed that McKechnie, 35, was pronounced dead as a result of the injuries he sustained. Investigators later determined that he had been traveling northwest on Front Ridge Road toward Orland when the vehicle suddenly left the roadway for reasons that are still under review.

According to investigators, the vehicle later re-entered the roadway but lost stability and rolled over before coming to a stop. During the crash, McKechnie was ejected from the vehicle, which significantly increased the severity of his injuries and reduced his chances of survival.

Preliminary findings suggest that speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors in the crash. Multiple law enforcement officers and local fire departments assisted at the scene, while crash reconstruction efforts are ongoing. Authorities say the investigation remains active as they work to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
