ATLANTA, Ga. — Authorities have arrested Anthony Tyrone Gresham in connection with a shooting aboard a MARTA train at Atlanta’s Midtown Station that left an unidentified man injured Friday evening. The arrest came after an extensive manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies, bringing an end to a search that stretched across the metro Atlanta area. While investigators continue working to determine what led to the violence, the incident has raised concerns among commuters who regularly rely on the city’s transit system.
According to MARTA Police, officers responded shortly after 7 p.m. Friday to reports of gunfire on a train stopped at the southbound platform of Midtown Station. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds to his left arm and leg. Emergency responders immediately provided medical assistance before transporting the injured man to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity, and no update on his current condition has been made public.
Investigators say both the victim and Gresham entered the station after paying their fares and initially boarded separate railcars. According to police, the situation escalated after the two men reportedly made eye contact across the station. Authorities allege that Gresham then approached the victim’s railcar and fired a weapon from the platform, striking the victim. The gunfire triggered a rapid response from MARTA Police and disrupted train service as officers secured the area and began searching for the suspect.
Following the shooting, investigators say Gresham fled the station before additional officers arrived. MARTA Police immediately launched an intensive investigation, reviewing surveillance footage and gathering evidence from the scene. Working alongside regional law enforcement partners, detectives were able to identify Gresham as the suspected gunman. Authorities then distributed information about the suspect and coordinated efforts to locate him as quickly as possible.
The search came to an end Sunday morning when officers tracked Gresham to Douglasville. According to authorities, he briefly fled into a wooded area after being located, prompting a large-scale operation involving local deputies, state troopers, K-9 teams, and aerial support. After an extensive search, officers successfully apprehended him without further incident. He was taken into custody and transported to the Douglas County Jail for processing.
Gresham has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Investigators have not disclosed a motive for the shooting and continue working to determine the events that led to the confrontation. Authorities are asking anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward as the investigation remains ongoing. Meanwhile, the victim continues receiving medical treatment as family members and loved ones await further updates on his recovery.
