Retired Officer Killed, Suspect Charged with Murder in New Windsor

A quiet neighborhood in New Windsor was rocked by violence Wednesday morning after a dispute between neighbors turned deadly, leaving one man dead and another facing a murder charge. The shocking incident has left residents stunned and grieving.

Authorities identified the victim as Larome A. Johnson, 57. According to the Town of New Windsor Police Department, officers were dispatched to Hawthorn Way just before 9 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found Johnson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Emergency responders quickly transported Johnson to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in an effort to save his life. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was later pronounced dead, leaving his family and loved ones in deep sorrow.

Police have identified the suspect as 47-year-old Thomas J. Crews. Authorities say Crews was arrested at the scene without incident and has been charged with second-degree murder. Investigators believe the shooting was the result of a long-standing dispute between neighbors, adding that the incident appears to be isolated with no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation remains active, with assistance from the New York State Police and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Officials are continuing to gather evidence and speak with witnesses as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the deadly encounter.

Johnson, who was reportedly a retired corrections officer and a cancer survivor, is being remembered by those who knew him as a strong and resilient man. His sudden and tragic death has left the community mourning, as friends, family, and neighbors reflect on a life cut short too soon.
