Air Canada Flight Attendant Solange Tremblay Ejected from Aircraft While Secured in Jumpseat

The aftermath of the fatal runway collision at LaGuardia Airport has brought new details about the human toll of the incident, which claimed the lives of two pilots and injured dozens of others. Among the victims was 30-year-old first officer Antoine Forest, a resident of Coteau-du-Lac, who had been serving with Jazz Aviation since December 2022.

Forest had trained at Cégep de Chicoutimi and previously flew for regional carriers including Air Saguenay and Exact Air. He was aboard a Bombardier CRJ-900 operating as Air Canada Flight AC8646 when it collided with a Port Authority fire truck on the runway. The captain of the aircraft was also killed, though their identity has not yet been publicly released.

Amid the devastation, flight attendant Solange Tremblay survived in extraordinary circumstances. Secured in her forward jumpseat, Tremblay was violently ejected from the aircraft when the collision caused catastrophic structural failure. Despite the extreme force of the impact, she remained restrained in her seat. Tremblay suffered serious injuries, including a broken leg requiring surgery, but avoided life-threatening trauma. Her daughter, Sarah Lépine, described her mother’s survival as “nothing short of miraculous.”

The collision occurred shortly before midnight when an air traffic controller cleared a fire truck to cross an active runway responding to a separate aircraft emergency. Moments later, the controller realized the potential conflict and urgently attempted to halt the vehicle, issuing repeated warnings. Audio recordings capture the tense exchange, but the instructions came too late to prevent the crash. Surveillance footage shows the CRJ-900 traveling at significant speed, shearing off the aircraft’s nose section upon impact.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, providing care to passengers, crew, and fire truck personnel. The aircraft carried 72 passengers and four crew members, with 41 individuals requiring hospitalization; most have since been treated and released. Observers have noted that the collision could have been far more catastrophic had it involved the aircraft’s fuel tanks. Nearby flight crews were alerted, with one describing the event as “not good to watch” over radio communications.

Federal investigators continue to examine the incident, focusing on runway incursion protocols, communication procedures, and the management of simultaneous emergencies. Officials clarified that unrelated issues, such as TSA security screening delays, did not contribute to the crash. The incident has highlighted challenges in aviation operations, particularly the complexity of coordinating multiple emergency responses on active runways while ensuring the safety of passengers and crew.
