Trooper, Mother, and Child Killed in Devastating I-35 Crash in Oklahoma City

The Oklahoma City community is mourning a tragic loss after a fatal multi-vehicle crash Wednesday morning claimed the lives of an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper, a mother, and her young daughter. The devastating accident occurred on Interstate 35, leaving the city and first responders in shock.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the crash happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. between Britton Road and Hefner Road. Investigators say the incident began when debris or equipment, believed to have fallen from a commercial vehicle, ended up on the roadway, creating a dangerous situation for drivers.

Officials reported that 36-year-old Mercedes Bayne, of Oklahoma City, was traveling southbound when she attempted to avoid the debris or reacted to vehicles slowing ahead of her. In the process, her vehicle crossed the center cable barrier and entered the northbound lanes, colliding head-on with a patrol unit driven by Trooper Vernon Brake.

The impact was fatal. Trooper Brake, Bayne, and Bayne’s 4-year-old daughter, Ariana, were all pronounced dead at the scene. Trooper Brake had served with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for nearly 20 years after graduating from the agency’s 56th Academy in 2006. Much of his career focused on commercial motor vehicle enforcement, and he is survived by his wife and two children.

Bayne is remembered by loved ones as a devoted mother and a woman of strong faith. She was a graduate of Putnam City West High School and had recently completed the esthetician program at Paul Mitchell The School in Norman, an achievement her family said she was proud of as she worked to provide a better future for her children.

Authorities confirmed by Wednesday evening that the commercial vehicle involved, either as the source of the debris or as a vehicle that stopped nearby, had been identified. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s Traffic Homicide Unit is leading the investigation, treating the crash as a crime scene while examining all contributing factors. Law enforcement agencies across the state have expressed condolences, and the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office honored Trooper Brake’s service and dedication. The investigation is ongoing as officials work to determine the full sequence of events leading to this tragic crash.
