JASPER, Ga. — Authorities in Jasper are investigating a tragic and high-profile shooting that left two people dead at the Pickens VA Clinic. The incident, which occurred on March 17, 2026, has shaken the local community and raised questions about safety at medical facilities.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), agents were called by the Jasper Police Department to respond to an officer-involved shooting at the VA outpatient clinic located on East Church Street. Investigators say the incident began inside the clinic around 1:30 p.m. when 34-year-old Nicholas “Nic” Crews of Marietta, who worked as a social work case manager, was shot by 51-year-old Lawrence Charles Michels of Jasper.
Authorities reported that Michels had arrived at the clinic seeking a walk-in mental health consultation. During the encounter, Crews sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to a trauma center. Despite extensive medical efforts, he tragically died the following day, March 18.
After the shooting inside the facility, Michels exited the building while still armed. Outside, he encountered responding law enforcement officers as well as an armed civilian. A gunfire exchange ensued between Michels, the officers, and the civilian. Michels was struck during the exchange and pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities confirmed that no law enforcement officers were injured.
The GBI is leading the active investigation, reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including how the events unfolded inside the clinic and the subsequent exchange outside. Officials have said that additional details will be released as the investigation continues.
The shooting has left the Jasper community reeling, as residents grapple with the loss of a dedicated VA worker and the violent events at a place meant for care and healing. Local leaders and community members are urging calm while the investigation continues and are calling for support for those affected by the tragedy.
