The community of Kent County is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 38-year-old Nicole Marie Moore and her 16-year-old daughter Kyli Grace Dodge, who died Tuesday in a tragic case of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. The devastating incident has left family, friends, and neighbors in deep sorrow.
According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the Maplewood Mobile Home Park around 2:30 p.m. after witnesses reported a strong smell of exhaust fumes coming from a parked Honda SUV. When authorities arrived, they discovered both victims inside the vehicle.
The Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed that Nicole and Kyli died from carbon monoxide asphyxiation. Investigators working alongside the Byron Township Fire Department measured carbon monoxide levels inside the SUV at more than 2,000 parts per million—an extremely dangerous concentration far exceeding the 35 parts per million level that typically requires evacuation.
Family members revealed that the SUV had known mechanical issues, including a faulty exhaust system and damaged floorboards. These conditions may have allowed the deadly gas to enter the vehicle. Relatives believe that after returning from a trip to Tennessee early that morning, the mother and daughter later went back into the SUV and may have fallen asleep while the engine was still running.
The sudden and tragic loss has deeply affected the family and the wider community. Nicole and Kyli are remembered as loving and kind individuals who brought warmth and joy to those around them. Their passing has created an overwhelming sense of grief, especially among close relatives who are now focused on supporting Nicole’s surviving children.
