Five Killed in Horrific Head-On Crash That Shattered Families in Cottonwood County, Minnesota

A devastating crash in Cottonwood County, Minnesota, has claimed the lives of five people, leaving an entire community in mourning. The tragic collision, described as one of the deadliest in recent state history, has brought heartbreak to multiple families and shaken residents across the region.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the crash occurred around 4:41 p.m. on Friday along Highway 71 near 240th Street, about 140 miles from the Twin Cities. Authorities reported that an SUV traveling northbound collided head-on with a southbound transit van carrying thirteen people, creating a catastrophic scene.

Officials confirmed that the driver of the SUV, 67-year-old Martin Nickolas Hanson of Springfield, died at the scene. Four passengers inside the transit van also lost their lives. They were identified as Kathleen Johnson, 73, Richard Johnson, 73, Kelly Hargus, 49, and Lindsey Rossow, 47.

The victims were described by loved ones as members of a close and deeply connected family. A relative shared emotional memories, recalling Richard’s humor, Kathleen’s warmth, and the strong bond shared among Kelly and Lindsey. Their sudden loss has left an unimaginable void for those who knew and loved them.

Several others inside the transit van survived but suffered injuries, some of them serious. Authorities said at least two individuals are in critical condition, while others continue to receive treatment. The emotional toll on survivors and their families is expected to be long-lasting.

Witnesses at the scene described the crash as horrifying. One bystander said he rushed to help, pulling injured passengers from the wreckage before emergency crews arrived. His actions, along with others who stepped in, helped provide aid during the chaotic moments following the collision.

In response to the tragedy, members of the community gathered for a vigil at a local church in Jackson, offering prayers and support to grieving families. The crash, now considered the deadliest in Minnesota since 2023, remains under investigation as authorities work to determine what led to the deadly collision.
