19-year-old Juan Mendez Fatally Shot Outside Abilene Home

A quiet neighborhood in Abilene was shaken Monday evening after a 19-year-old man was fatally shot outside a residence, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities.

According to the Abilene Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Concord Drive in North Abilene at approximately 5:30 p.m. on March 23, 2026. The call reported an injured individual and a possible shooting, leading to an urgent response from police and emergency personnel.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Juan Diego Mendez lying unresponsive outside the entrance of the home with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. First responders immediately began life-saving efforts before rushing him to a nearby hospital. Despite their attempts, Mendez was later pronounced dead at 6:04 p.m., leaving family and friends devastated.

Investigators confirmed that a 19-year-old woman, who was reportedly in a dating relationship with Mendez, was inside the home when the shooting occurred. She was taken in for questioning as part of standard procedure but has not been arrested. Authorities have not disclosed further details about her role, and it remains unclear what events led up to the shooting.
