3 killed ID’d in I-88 wrong-way crash near Aurora, Including UIC Student-Athletes

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. — A devastating wrong-way crash on Interstate 88 near the Aurora area claimed the lives of three people early on the morning of May 10, leaving multiple communities mourning a heartbreaking and sudden tragedy. Authorities say the violent head-on collision occurred around 4 a.m. near milepost 112.25 in Sugar Grove and remains under active investigation by the Illinois State Police.

According to the Kane County Coroner’s Office, the wrong-way driver was identified as 32-year-old Jonathan Rivera of Melrose Park. Investigators said Rivera was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-88 when his vehicle collided head-on with another car carrying two young women from DeKalb. The impact of the crash was catastrophic, causing fatal injuries to everyone involved.

Officials identified the driver of the second vehicle as 21-year-old Sariyah Watson of DeKalb, a sprinter at the University of Illinois Chicago. Her passenger was identified as 21-year-old Heaven Michele Williams, also of DeKalb. Authorities confirmed that all three victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Autopsy findings later revealed that each victim died from multiple traumatic injuries consistent with a severe motor vehicle collision.

The deaths of Watson and Williams have deeply affected classmates, friends, and loved ones throughout the DeKalb and University of Illinois Chicago communities. Watson was remembered not only as a student-athlete but as a young woman with a promising future ahead of her.
