A tragic early-morning crash has claimed the life of a man from Lake Charles, leaving the community grieving and raising renewed concerns about impaired driving. The fatal collision occurred Thursday, April 9, 2026, in Calcasieu Parish, involving three vehicles along a rural stretch of highway.
According to Louisiana State Police Troop D, the crash happened shortly before 6:00 a.m. near the intersection of Louisiana Highway 27 and Louisiana Highway 397 in the Bell City area. Troopers responded to the scene and quickly began investigating what led to the devastating incident.
Preliminary findings indicate that a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 32-year-old Alfonso Arredondo of Port Neches, was traveling southbound when it suddenly crossed the center line. The vehicle sideswiped two northbound vehicles—a Hyundai Santa Fe and a Buick Park Avenue—before losing control.
Authorities say the Silverado then left the roadway, entered a ditch, and overturned. Erick John, 32, of Lake Charles, who was driving the Buick Park Avenue and was properly restrained, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His sudden death has left family and loved ones mourning a life cut short.
The driver of the Hyundai and four passengers inside the vehicle were also properly restrained and survived the crash, though they were transported to a nearby hospital with minor to moderate injuries. Their survival stands in contrast to the tragic loss experienced by John’s family.
During the investigation, troopers observed signs of impairment in Arredondo. He was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center on multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, vehicular negligent injury, and driving while intoxicated. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging drivers to remain alert, avoid impaired driving, and prioritize safety on the road.
