A high-speed police pursuit on Interstate 20 in Atlanta ended in tragedy Monday afternoon when 51-year-old Chatanna Ohiyesha Patterson lost her life after being struck during a crash linked to a fleeing driver. The incident has left a family grieving and a community shaken, while authorities continue to investigate the deadly sequence of events.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, the incident began when a trooper attempted to stop a 26-year-old driver, Fre’shun Tyai White of Marietta, for allegedly traveling nearly 90 mph in a 55 mph zone. Instead of stopping, investigators say White initially slowed down before suddenly accelerating and fleeing the traffic stop.
Authorities report that the chase quickly became dangerous as White’s Hyundai Elantra weaved across multiple lanes of traffic while traveling along Interstate 20 in Fulton County. At one point, he exited onto Boulevard, reentered the interstate, and narrowly avoided several collisions as troopers attempted to follow at a safe distance.
The situation escalated further when White exited onto Hill Street at a high rate of speed. Investigators believe he lost control of the vehicle, which then crossed into a gas station parking lot. The vehicle struck a parked car where Chatanna Ohiyesha Patterson was standing nearby, causing fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
White, along with a passenger in his vehicle and the driver of the parked car, sustained serious injuries in the crash and were transported to a hospital for treatment. Their current conditions have not yet been released by officials. The sudden violence of the crash has left witnesses and responders deeply shaken.
White has since been charged with multiple offenses, including first-degree vehicular homicide and serious injury by vehicle. The Georgia State Patrol continues to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the pursuit and crash, as loved ones mourn the loss of a woman whose life was cut short in an instant of chaos and speed.
