The community of Hickory, North Carolina, is mourning the tragic loss of 7-year-old Abel Friday, who died following a drowning incident on Wednesday evening. The heartbreaking event took place at Bruce Meisner Park, leaving families and residents in deep shock as they struggle to come to terms with the loss of such a young life.
According to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were called to the park at approximately 6:52 p.m. on April 1, 2026, after reports of a drowning. When first responders arrived, they discovered a young boy submerged in a body of water connected to the park. Firefighters worked quickly and were able to pull Abel from about 10 feet below the surface.
Abel was immediately rushed to Frye Regional Medical Center in a desperate effort to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Authorities confirmed that his family has been notified, and the case is now being handled by the sheriff’s office Criminal Investigations Division as they work to understand exactly what happened.
