Authorities in Nevada County have arrested Seth David Cotten in connection with the ongoing homicide investigation surrounding the death of Jeremy Norton, a 45-year-old Nevada City resident whose tragic death has left family members and the community searching for answers. The arrest follows weeks of investigation into a violent case that authorities say involved multiple incidents connected to the suspect.
According to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office, deputies discovered Jeremy Norton deceased on April 11 after responding to reports connected to the case. Investigators determined that Norton had suffered an apparent gunshot wound, prompting detectives to immediately launch a homicide investigation. Authorities say detectives worked tirelessly in the weeks that followed, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and pursuing leads in an effort to uncover what happened.
During the investigation, detectives identified Seth David Cotten, 33, as a suspect of interest. Authorities later learned that Cotten had allegedly attempted to kill Norton and another individual days earlier during a separate shooting incident on April 3. Investigators began examining both incidents together as evidence developed, believing the cases were closely connected.
On May 18, law enforcement officials tracked Cotten to a residence on Lower Colfax Road in Grass Valley. A large law enforcement presence surrounded the property as authorities worked to safely take the suspect into custody. Multiple agencies assisted in the operation, including the Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Detail, Crisis Negotiations Team, Drone Team, Placer County Sheriff’s Office, CAL FIRE, and emergency medical personnel.
Officials said Cotten ultimately surrendered peacefully without further incident. He was taken into custody and booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility during the early morning hours of May 19 on an attempted murder warrant. Authorities confirmed that he remains the primary suspect in Jeremy Norton’s homicide, and investigators expect additional charges as the case continues moving forward.
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office stated that detectives and prosecutors are continuing to work closely together as they pursue justice for Jeremy Norton, his family, and the surviving victim involved in the earlier shooting. As the investigation remains ongoing, the Nevada City community continues mourning a life lost to violence while loved ones hold onto memories of Norton and await further answers in the tragic case.
