46-year-old Michael Vebert Killed in fatal Marshall County Crash

A tragic collision on Tuesday morning in Marshall County claimed the life of 46-year-old Michael Vebert of Fort Wayne, leaving two passengers injured and the local community in shock. The crash occurred at approximately 11:23 a.m. at the intersection of State Road 17 and State Road 8, highlighting the dangers that can occur even on familiar roads.

According to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Vebert was driving a 2008 Mercury Sable eastbound on State Road 8 when he failed to yield the right of way to a southbound 2018 Freightliner semi-tractor-trailer. The semi was driven by 61-year-old Mitchell Sailor of Elkhart. The vehicles collided violently, leaving devastating consequences for those involved.

Michael Vebert was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the crash. His sudden death has left family, friends, and the community grappling with a heartbreaking loss. Many residents expressed sorrow and concern, noting that intersection accidents can happen in a split second and often have life-altering consequences.

Two passengers in Vebert’s vehicle were also injured in the crash. An adult front-seat passenger and a juvenile rear-seat passenger were transported to Memorial Hospital of South Bend for treatment. Their current conditions have not been publicly disclosed, but authorities say both remain under medical care as they recover from injuries sustained in the collision.

The driver of the semi-tractor-trailer, Mitchell Sailor, was uninjured and declined medical treatment at the scene. Multiple agencies assisted in responding to the crash, including the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Plymouth Fire/EMS, Culver EMS, and the Marshall County Coroner’s Office. Investigators are continuing to examine the scene and collect evidence to determine the exact circumstances that led to the tragic accident.
