Authorities in Fort Worth have arrested a 17-year-old mother following a tragic vehicle crash earlier this month that resulted in the death of her 6-month-old son. The heartbreaking incident has drawn attention as investigators continue reviewing the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
According to the Fort Worth Police Department, the crash occurred on March 7 near the intersection of Rock Island Street and Azle Avenue. Officers responded to reports of a serious collision involving two vehicles and quickly secured the area while emergency responders assisted those injured in the crash.
Investigators determined that the driver, identified as 17-year-old Karla Lopez, allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign before entering the intersection. Authorities say her vehicle collided with another car that was traveling through the roadway at the time. The impact of the crash caused significant damage and led to a tragic outcome.
Inside Lopez’s vehicle was her infant son, Sebastian Reyes. Police said the six-month-old child was not properly restrained in a child safety seat when the crash occurred. As a result of the violent collision, the infant was ejected from the vehicle and suffered critical injuries.
Emergency responders rushed the baby to a nearby hospital where doctors and medical staff attempted life-saving treatment. Despite those efforts, Sebastian Reyes later died from the severe injuries he sustained in the crash. Lopez was also injured during the accident, though authorities described her injuries as non-life-threatening.
After receiving medical treatment, Lopez was taken into custody by police. Investigators said she has been charged with reckless injury to a child resulting in serious bodily injury. Authorities noted that the case remains under investigation, and additional details or potential charges may be announced as investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
