Two Dead After Prisoner Transport Van Crashes, Catches Fire on I-10 in Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. — Authorities are investigating a deadly crash Wednesday on Interstate 10 involving a prisoner transport van and a utility truck. The violent collision left two people dead and several others critically injured, shutting down part of the busy highway as emergency crews responded to the scene.

According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the westbound van was operated by the St. Joseph Detention Center in Daytona, Florida. The van was carrying two staff members and two inmates at the time of the crash. Officials identified the driver as 32-year-old Michael Valera. He was pronounced dead at the scene, along with one of the inmates, 34-year-old William Rodman.

Authorities said the crash happened when the van collided with a utility truck traveling along I-10. After the impact, the van reportedly left the roadway, overturned, and caught fire. The intensity of the crash prompted a large emergency response, with troopers and other first responders arriving quickly to assist victims and secure the area.

A second staff member, 27-year-old Javier Arroyo, and another inmate, 29-year-old Raymond Boertmann, sustained life-threatening injuries. Both were airlifted to an out-of-state hospital for specialized treatment. Their current conditions have not been publicly updated. The driver of the utility truck, 54-year-old Jerry Jenkins of Gautier, suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance for medical care.

Investigators are working to determine what led to the collision. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is reviewing all available evidence, including witness statements and roadway conditions, to establish the cause and any contributing factors. Officials have not yet indicated whether speed, weather, or mechanical issues may have played a role in the crash.
