WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. — A tragic crash claimed the life of a 32-year-old man Monday night after he was struck by multiple vehicles while walking along a busy highway in Whitley County. Authorities say the incident unfolded suddenly, leaving little time for drivers to react and ending in a devastating loss that has shaken the local community.
According to police, Vicente Ramos, 32, of Adrian, Michigan, walked into the roadway for reasons that remain unclear around 6:45 p.m. The incident occurred on U.S. 24, west of County Road 800 East, a stretch of highway known for steady traffic. Investigators say Ramos was hit by three separate vehicles traveling along the roadway.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene shortly after the collisions were reported. Despite their efforts, Ramos was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries. Authorities confirmed that no other injuries were reported among the drivers or passengers involved in the crash.
Police identified the drivers of the three vehicles as a 65-year-old man from North Manchester, a 21-year-old man from North Webster, and a 68-year-old woman from Lagro. All three remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. At this time, police have not indicated that any charges have been filed.
The circumstances that led Ramos to enter the roadway are still under investigation. Officials have not released details about lighting conditions, traffic flow, or whether impairment or distraction may have played a role. Investigators are continuing to review evidence and statements to better understand how the tragedy unfolded.
Monday night’s fatal crash serves as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by pedestrians and motorists alike on high-speed roadways. Authorities urge drivers to remain alert, especially during evening hours, and remind pedestrians to avoid walking along highways whenever possible. As the investigation continues, the Whitley County community mourns the loss of Vicente Ramos, while officials work to piece together the moments that led to his untimely death.
