37-year-old Tyler Dukes killed in Head-On Crash on US 50 in Ripley County

A quiet Sunday afternoon in Ripley County turned tragic after a violent head-on collision claimed the life of a 37-year-old man. According to Indiana State Police, the crash happened shortly before 3 p.m. on U.S. 50 at County Road 600 West, near the small community of Holton. The accident involved a passenger vehicle and a commercial truck, leaving one man dead and another injured.

Troopers said Tyler Dukes, 37, of Madison, Indiana, was driving a 2008 Mercury Mariner eastbound on U.S. 50 when, for reasons that are still unknown, his vehicle crossed the center line. Investigators say the SUV entered the westbound lane directly into the path of a 2022 Volvo truck pulling a trailer. The truck was traveling westbound at the time of the crash.

Authorities reported that the two vehicles collided nearly head-on in the westbound lane. The impact was severe, causing heavy damage to both vehicles. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, Dukes was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials say the force of the crash left little chance of survival.

The driver of the commercial truck, identified as a 26-year-old man from Spring Hill, Florida, survived the crash. He was transported to Margaret Mary Health for treatment. Police said his injuries were not considered life-threatening. Authorities have not released further details about his condition.

Investigators spent hours at the crash site gathering evidence and documenting the scene. Traffic along U.S. 50 was slowed as troopers worked to clear the wreckage and begin their investigation. Officials have not said what may have caused Dukes’ vehicle to cross the center line.

Indiana State Police confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing. Toxicology results for both drivers are pending as part of standard procedure in fatal crashes. Authorities say more information may be released once the investigation is complete, as the Ripley County community mourns the sudden loss of a local man.
