Authorities in Hamblen County are investigating a fatal confrontation that left one man dead on Saturday evening. The Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident occurred around 7 p.m. at a residence in the western part of the county. Deputies were dispatched following reports of a disturbance between two individuals, and the case remains under active investigation.
When deputies arrived, they discovered 39-year-old Tommy Nguyen suffering from multiple injuries. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by first responders, Nguyen was pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff Chad Mullins confirmed the tragic death in a statement Sunday, calling the event “a deeply unfortunate situation.” The sheriff’s office said investigators are working to determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal encounter.
Preliminary findings indicate that the property owner, 41-year-old Landon Huffman, told deputies he had been involved in the incident. Early reports suggest an altercation occurred between Huffman and Nguyen, which escalated quickly into a physical struggle. Investigators said Nguyen allegedly approached Huffman while holding a stick, and during the confrontation, Huffman discharged his firearm. Authorities have not released how many shots were fired or where Nguyen was struck.
Sheriff Mullins emphasized that no charges have been filed at this stage of the investigation. “Our investigators are continuing to collect evidence and interview witnesses to determine the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event,” he said. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been notified and may assist with forensic processing as part of standard protocol in cases involving a death. Officials are reviewing evidence, including any available surveillance footage, to piece together the moments leading up to the shooting.
Deputies remained on the property for several hours Saturday night, documenting the scene and collecting materials relevant to the investigation. Authorities have not commented on whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the altercation. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office to determine if any charges are warranted. Sheriff Mullins said the department’s goal is to ensure “a fair and thorough review of all facts” before any legal action is taken.
Residents in the area expressed shock and sadness at the news, describing their community as quiet and typically free from violent crime. Many offered condolences to both families affected by the tragedy. Local officials encouraged residents to seek help from law enforcement when disputes arise, stressing that conflicts can quickly turn deadly. The Sheriff’s Office said further updates will be provided as more details become available.
