Pennsylvania State Trooper Killed in Line of Duty While Responding to Erratic Driver

The state of Pennsylvania is mourning the tragic loss of Timothy O’Connor, a dedicated state trooper who was fatally shot while responding to a report of an erratic driver on Sunday evening in West Caln Township. The heartbreaking incident has shaken the local community and law enforcement agencies across the state, as many remember O’Connor as a brave officer who served with commitment and honor.

The trooper’s death was announced shortly after midnight Monday by Josh Shapiro during a press conference. In response to the tragedy, the governor ordered flags across the state to be flown at half-staff to honor the fallen officer. Shapiro described O’Connor as a hero who died while protecting others. The governor also expressed sympathy to the trooper’s grieving family. O’Connor is survived by his wife, young daughter, and his parents.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the incident began around 8:16 p.m. Sunday when O’Connor responded to a report about an erratic driver in the Honey Brook area. Authorities say the trooper located the vehicle and carried out a traffic stop at approximately 8:24 p.m. near the intersection of Pennsylvania Route 10 and Michael Road in West Caln Township.

Officials said concern grew when O’Connor stopped responding to radio calls from dispatchers. Backup officers were quickly sent to the scene. When they arrived, they discovered the trooper had been shot during the traffic stop. Acting Commissioner George L. Bivens later explained that the suspect, a 32-year-old man from Chester County, allegedly fired through the driver-side window of the vehicle, striking the trooper.

Authorities said the suspect then exited the vehicle, walked a short distance away, and died by suicide. Meanwhile, O’Connor was rushed to Paoli Hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, the trooper was sadly pronounced dead. Investigators closed portions of Pennsylvania Route 10 between Lammey Road and Hill Road for several hours as they examined the scene.

The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of grief from community leaders and residents across Pennsylvania. Eric Roe asked the public to keep O’Connor’s family and fellow officers in their prayers, while Dave Sunday also shared a message of support for law enforcement. As the state mourns, many are remembering Corporal Timothy O’Connor as a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting his community.
