36-year-old Timothy Elbert Killed in Baton Rouge Street Shooting

BATON ROUGE, La. — Baton Rouge police are investigating a deadly shooting that left one man dead Tuesday evening. Officers said the shooting happened on North Street near North 25th Street and has been classified as a homicide. The incident has raised fresh concerns about gun violence in the area as detectives work to determine what led to the fatal encounter.

The Baton Rouge Police Department identified the victim as Timothy Elbert, 36. Officers were called to the scene around 5:48 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, after receiving reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Elbert lying in the roadway, suffering from at least one gunshot wound, according to police.

Police said officers immediately began rendering aid at the scene while waiting for emergency medical services to arrive. Elbert was later transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. Despite efforts by first responders and hospital staff, police said Elbert died from his injuries a short time after arriving at the hospital.

Investigators have not released details about what led up to the shooting or whether a suspect has been identified. Police have also not said if the shooting was targeted or random. The area around North Street and North 25th Street was secured for several hours as detectives collected evidence and spoke with potential witnesses.

Detectives are continuing to canvass the neighborhood and review any available surveillance footage from nearby homes or businesses. Police said they are following up on all leads but emphasized that the investigation is still in its early stages. Authorities have not confirmed whether there is an ongoing threat to the community.
