A tragic pedestrian accident in Hackensack, New Jersey has claimed the life of a 31-year-old woman who was struck by a school bus Tuesday morning while crossing the street. Authorities say the incident occurred on March 10, 2026, and remains under investigation as officials work to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the collision.
According to the Hackensack Police Department, officers responded at approximately 8:27 a.m. to a crash involving a pedestrian and a school bus at the intersection of South Summit Avenue and West Pleasantview Avenue. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene after receiving reports that a pedestrian had been struck while crossing the roadway.
Investigators said the woman was walking across South Summit Avenue within a clearly marked crosswalk when the collision occurred. The school bus, operated by J&W Financial LLC, was making a left turn from West Pleasantview Avenue onto South Summit Avenue at the time of the crash.
The pedestrian was later identified as Tima J. Asp, 31, of Lodi, New Jersey. She suffered severe injuries and was rushed by emergency medical personnel to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite life-saving efforts by medical staff, Asp later died from her injuries.
Officials confirmed that the bus driver remained at the scene and has fully cooperated with investigators. Detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, along with members of the Bergen County Fatal Accident Task Force, responded to assist in a joint investigation with local police.
Authorities say the investigation so far has found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing, and criminal charges are not expected to be filed. However, the Hackensack Police Department will continue reviewing the circumstances of the crash with assistance from county investigators as the community mourns the loss of a young woman whose life ended in a heartbreaking accident.
