A frightening and deeply unsettling security incident unfolded Thursday afternoon in West Bloomfield Township when a man rammed a vehicle into the entrance of a synagogue and opened fire, sparking panic and a massive law enforcement response across the area. Authorities later identified the suspect as Thomas Wright, 28, who was killed during the incident. The alarming situation caused lockdowns at nearby schools and places of worship and left residents shaken as police worked to secure the scene.
The attack occurred shortly before 1:00 p.m. at Temple Israel, located along Walnut Lake Road between Orchard Lake Road and Drake Road. According to officials, a vehicle crashed into the front entrance of the synagogue before the driver began firing shots. Emergency calls quickly poured in, prompting a rapid and coordinated response from multiple law enforcement agencies in the area.
People inside the synagogue were immediately alerted through emergency messages that a lockdown had been put in place. Congregants and staff were instructed to move to secure locations within the building and remain there while authorities responded. The messages warned that a truck had been driven into the building and that the suspect had opened fire, causing fear and uncertainty among those sheltering inside.
Authorities later confirmed that Wright died during the incident. According to Michael Bouchard of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, there were no confirmed injuries among congregants, synagogue staff, or members of the public during the early stages of the investigation. Officers spent several hours clearing the building and surrounding property to ensure there were no additional threats.
The seriousness of the situation prompted a large police presence throughout the area. Officers from numerous agencies responded, including the Michigan State Police along with police departments from surrounding communities. Tactical units and armored vehicles were deployed as authorities carefully secured the area and searched for any signs that the suspect may have had assistance.
As the investigation unfolded, nearby schools in Bloomfield Hills and Farmington Hills placed students and staff under precautionary shelter-in-place orders. The Jewish Federation of Detroit also confirmed that community agencies entered lockdown as a safety precaution. State leaders, including Gretchen Whitmer and Dana Nessel, said they were closely monitoring the situation while emphasizing that acts of violence and hatred have no place in the state. Meanwhile, investigators continue working to gather evidence and determine what led to the disturbing attack.
