MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. — A 72-year-old woman lost her life in a tragic car crash that occurred on the morning of the Fourth of July in Middleborough. The fatal incident took place around 8:27 a.m. on Friday, July 4, near 446 Wareham Street, part of the busy Route 28 corridor, according to the Middleborough Police Department.
The victim, identified as Susan Sumner of Middleborough, was found inside her vehicle after it veered off the road and crashed into a wooded area. Emergency responders from Middleborough Police and Fire Departments arrived at the scene quickly, but despite their efforts, Sumner was pronounced dead on-site. Investigators have not yet determined what caused her vehicle to leave the roadway.
In response to the crash, Massachusetts State Police shut down the ramps from Interstate 495 to Route 28 at Exit 8 to allow investigators to examine the scene safely. The closures caused temporary delays for holiday travelers. By approximately 12:50 p.m., all lanes and ramps were reopened to traffic.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing and is being led by the Middleborough Police Department, Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, and the State Police Collision Reconstruction and Analysis Support Section (CRASH). Investigators will review vehicle damage, road conditions, and possible medical issues that may have contributed to the crash.
No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the incident, and no additional injuries were reported. Authorities are examining nearby surveillance footage and analyzing data from the vehicle to determine what led to the fatal crash. Investigators have not yet released whether speed, distraction, or a medical emergency played a role.
Susan Sumner was a longtime resident of the Middleborough community. While no official statement has been issued by her family, the community has expressed condolences and support for those grieving her loss. The timing of the accident—on a holiday morning—has made the tragedy even more heartbreaking for neighbors and friends.
Authorities continue to urge drivers to stay alert and cautious, particularly during holiday periods when traffic increases. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information is encouraged to contact the Middleborough Police Department or the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office as the investigation continues.
