Texas Man Stephen McMahon Killed in Head-On Crash on Route 262 in Augusta County

A deadly crash on Route 262 in Augusta County claimed the life of a Texas man Monday afternoon and left another driver seriously injured, according to Virginia State Police. The collision happened just after 3:20 p.m. and caused significant disruption as emergency crews responded to the scene and investigators worked to determine what led to the tragedy.

Virginia State Police said the crash occurred around 3:24 p.m. when a 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander traveling southbound on Route 262 suddenly left its lane. The vehicle was being driven by 40-year-old Stephen Sean McMahon of Hays, Texas. For reasons that remain under investigation, McMahon’s vehicle crossed the grass median separating the lanes of traffic and entered the northbound side of the roadway.

Once in the northbound lanes, the Mitsubishi collided head-on with a 2024 Audi Q5. The Audi was driven by 73-year-old Alan J. Wallis of Craigsville. Troopers said the impact of the crash was severe, causing extensive damage to both vehicles and prompting an immediate emergency response.

McMahon suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators noted that he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the preliminary accident report. Authorities have not yet said whether speed, medical issues, or other factors may have contributed to McMahon losing control of his vehicle.

Wallis was seriously injured in the collision and was transported by emergency responders to Augusta Health for treatment. His current condition has not been released, but police described his injuries as serious. Officials said Wallis was the sole occupant of his vehicle at the time of the crash.

Virginia State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Troopers are examining the roadway, vehicle evidence, and other factors to better understand what caused the Mitsubishi to cross the median. Authorities also used the incident to remind drivers of the importance of wearing seat belts, noting that proper restraint can significantly reduce the risk of death or serious injury in crashes. As the investigation continues, the crash stands as a sobering reminder of how quickly lives can be changed on the road.
