A devastating single-vehicle crash late Saturday night in Maple Heights claimed the life of a 45-year-old woman and left another woman critically injured, according to the Maple Heights Police Department. Authorities say the crash involved a speeding vehicle that slammed into a tree with extreme force, leaving behind a scene described by responders as tragic and violent.

Police identified the victim as Sherece Mays, 45, who died from injuries sustained in the crash. Officers were dispatched to Rockside Road near Lee Road South at approximately 11:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious accident. When officers arrived, they encountered extensive damage and debris scattered across the roadway.

According to investigators, the vehicle struck a tree so hard that it was split in half. Mays was found beneath the wreckage and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not confirmed whether she was driving or riding as a passenger at the time of the crash, as the investigation is still ongoing.

A second victim, a 44-year-old woman, was also inside the vehicle when it crashed. She became trapped inside the mangled car and required rescue by the Maple Heights Fire Department. Firefighters worked to free her from the wreckage before she was airlifted by medical helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center for emergency treatment.

As of Tuesday, police said the surviving victim remains in critical condition. Her identity has not been released, and officials have not provided additional details regarding her injuries or prognosis. Family members have not spoken publicly as authorities continue to gather information.

Investigators believe speed played a role in the crash, but the exact cause has not yet been determined. Police are examining physical evidence, vehicle damage, and other factors to understand what led to the vehicle leaving the roadway and striking the tree. Officials emphasized that the investigation is active and ongoing.

The Maple Heights Police Department is asking for the public’s help as they work to piece together the moments leading up to the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information is urged to contact the Maple Heights Detective Bureau at 216-587-9624.
