The vibrant nightlife of Austin was shattered early Sunday morning when a mass shooting outside Buford’s claimed the lives of two young people and left more than a dozen others injured. The tragedy unfolded in the heart of the city’s famed Sixth Street entertainment district, turning what should have been a lively weekend night into a scene of chaos and heartbreak.
Authorities identified the victims as Savitha Shan, 21, and Ryder Harrington, 19. Both were fatally shot during the attack. Family members and friends are now mourning the sudden and devastating loss of two lives cut tragically short. In total, officials confirmed that three people — including the gunman — were killed, and 14 others sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical.
According to the Austin Police Department, the gunman was identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Senegal. Police say Diagne opened fire from outside the bar around 1:40 a.m., sending crowds fleeing in panic. Officers quickly responded and confronted the suspect, fatally shooting him at the scene to prevent further harm.
Investigators revealed that the firearms used in the attack were legally purchased in 2017. Authorities also confirmed that Diagne was not previously known to APD or the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Concerns about possible explosives in the suspect’s vehicle led to a bomb squad evaluation, but no explosives were found. Detectives are continuing to examine physical evidence and digital records as part of the ongoing investigation.
Among the injured is Jorge Pederson, who remains in critical condition and is expected to be taken off life support. Two other victims are also listed in critical condition, while others are recovering from injuries sustained during the gunfire. The emotional toll on survivors and their families is immense as they grapple with trauma and uncertainty.
As the city mourns, officials are urging anyone with photos or video of the incident to submit them through official channels to aid investigators. Victims and their families can contact APD’s Victim Services at 512-974-5037 for assistance. In the wake of this senseless act of violence, Austin stands united in grief, honoring the memories of Savitha Shan and Ryder Harrington while supporting all those whose lives were forever changed.
