California Driver killed in Late-Night Semi-Truck Crash in Clay County

CLAY COUNTY — A tragic late-night crash in Clay County has left one man dead after a semi-truck veered off the road and struck a railroad car, according to authorities. The deadly accident happened late Friday night and remains under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

According to a preliminary DPS report, the crash occurred at about 10:27 p.m. on Friday, February 6, along U.S. Highway 287, roughly one mile southeast of the city of Bellevue. A 2025 Freightliner truck pulling a 2019 Great Dane semi-trailer was traveling northwest when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Investigators said the truck failed to stay in a single lane and drifted off the right side of the roadway. After leaving the pavement, the vehicle traveled up an embankment and struck a railroad car that was sitting on the tracks. The impact caused the truck to roll onto its left side before coming to a stop.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported. Despite their efforts, the driver suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities later identified the victim as Sandeep Singh, a 34-year-old man from Manteca, California.

The crash scene was secured as investigators worked to document evidence and determine what may have caused the truck to leave the roadway. DPS officials have not yet said whether speed, fatigue, weather conditions, or mechanical issues played a role in the crash. No other vehicles were reported to be involved.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by drivers traveling long distances, especially at night. Officials continue to urge motorists, particularly commercial drivers, to remain alert, obey traffic laws, and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and additional details may be released as more information becomes available.
