A tragic head-on collision in Martin County on Monday morning claimed the life of a Lubbock man and left another driver injured. Authorities say the crash occurred along State Highway 349, where two vehicles collided after one driver lost control and crossed into oncoming traffic.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the crash involved a 2010 Cadillac SRX and a 2010 Mercedes sedan. Investigators said the Cadillac was traveling southbound on State Highway 349 when the driver drifted onto the rumble strips along the edge of the roadway. The sudden movement appears to have caused the driver to overcorrect while attempting to return to the lane.
Authorities say the overcorrection caused the Cadillac to veer across the center of the highway and into the northbound lanes. At the same time, a Mercedes was traveling north along the same stretch of road. The vehicles collided head-on, resulting in a violent crash that left both cars heavily damaged.
The driver of the Mercedes was identified as Samuel Jones Lookadoo, a 46-year-old man from Lubbock. Officials confirmed that Lookadoo suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. The sudden loss has left family members and loved ones grieving the tragic circumstances surrounding his death.
The driver of the Cadillac SRX survived the crash and was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital for treatment. Authorities reported that the driver sustained minor injuries and is expected to recover. Officials have not released the driver’s identity at this time.
Troopers continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the fatal collision. The Texas Department of Public Safety is working to determine all contributing factors, including road conditions and driver actions before the crash. Authorities have not announced whether any charges will be filed as the investigation remains ongoing.
