MARION, Iowa — An 18-year-old man died Wednesday after being shot by police during a tense encounter in a residential neighborhood on Deer Valley Drive, according to Marion authorities. The shooting has been classified as an officer-involved incident and is now under investigation. The young man was identified by police as Saber Bernard.
According to the Marion Police Department, the incident began when Bernard asked a neighbor to call police because he wanted to speak with officers. When police arrived at the scene, they made contact with Bernard outside a residence. Officers said they spoke with him for approximately three minutes, attempting to communicate and understand the reason for the call.
Police said the situation escalated when Bernard allegedly produced a machete during the interaction. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon and attempted to de-escalate the situation. Authorities said officers deployed a taser in an effort to stop Bernard without using deadly force, but the taser was unsuccessful.
As Bernard continued to approach officers while armed, police said an officer fired one shot, striking him. Emergency medical personnel responded, and Bernard was transported to a nearby hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, he later died from his injuries, authorities confirmed. No officers were injured during the encounter.
Following the shooting, the officers involved were placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. Their identities have not been released. An investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events, including a review of body camera footage, witness statements, and other evidence.
Authorities said the investigation will be conducted thoroughly to ensure transparency and accountability.
