FORT PLAIN, N.Y. — A small Montgomery County community is reeling after an elderly couple was discovered dead inside their Clinton Avenue residence Friday afternoon in what authorities are investigating as a double homicide.
According to the Fort Plain Police Department, officers were dispatched to 38 Clinton Ave. at approximately 4 p.m. on Feb. 20. The response followed a call from a man in his 40s who reported an “incident” involving his parents. When officers arrived at the scene, they located the bodies of a husband and wife, both believed to be in their 70s, inside the home. Police quickly secured the residence and began treating the case as a double homicide.
Authorities confirmed that the man who contacted police was taken into custody at the scene without incident. Officials stated that he remains under investigation in connection with the deaths. While police have not formally released his name pending the filing of official charges, local reports and online booking records identified the suspect as Robert Robbins.
Robbins was later booked into the Montgomery County Jail, according to publicly available records. Law enforcement officials, however, have declined to confirm additional details about the suspect as the investigation remains active. The identities of the deceased couple have not yet been publicly released as authorities work to notify extended family members and gather further information.
Investigators have not disclosed a possible motive or the circumstances that may have led to the deaths. Autopsies are scheduled to be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death. Police indicated that forensic analysis of evidence collected from inside the residence will be crucial in piecing together the timeline of events.
The Fort Plain Police Department is urging anyone with information related to the case to contact its detective division. As investigators continue their work, the tragic discovery has left neighbors stunned in this close-knit village, where violent crimes are rare and families have long-standing ties within the community.
