PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — A quiet Monday evening turned tragic after a woman was fatally stabbed inside a Barnes & Noble bookstore in Palm Beach Gardens, according to police. The shocking violence has left shoppers, employees, and the surrounding community shaken as investigators work to determine what led to the deadly attack.
The Palm Beach Gardens Police Department said the stabbing occurred around 7:53 p.m. on December 22 at the bookstore located at 11380 Legacy Avenue. Officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of a stabbing inside the store. When they arrived, they found a woman suffering from severe stab wounds and immediately began lifesaving measures.
The victim was later identified as 65-year-old Rita B. Loncharich. Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue transported her to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of first responders and hospital staff, Loncharich later died from her injuries. Police confirmed her death later that evening, and her family was notified.
Witnesses inside the store told investigators that the suspect stabbed Loncharich and then fled the scene on foot. The sudden act of violence caused panic among customers and employees, many of whom were inside the store at the time. Officers quickly secured the area and began searching for the suspect based on witness descriptions.
Detectives identified the suspect as 40-year-old Antonio R. Moore. Police said Moore was located and taken into custody shortly after the stabbing. Authorities have not released details about where he was found or whether Loncharich and Moore knew each other. At this time, investigators have not disclosed a possible motive for the attack.
The investigation remains active as detectives continue to interview witnesses and review evidence.
