Rockford Man Dies in Small Plane Crash in Poplar Grove

Boone County, Illinois, is mourning the tragic loss of 83-year-old Richard McClung of Rockford, who died Saturday afternoon in a small plane crash in Poplar Grove. The sudden accident ended a long and complex life, leaving the community shocked and investigators working to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

According to the Boone County Coroner’s Office, an autopsy performed on February 17 confirmed that McClung died from injuries sustained in the crash. The aircraft involved was identified as a Wittman W-8, registered to McClung in FAA records. Authorities are investigating potential causes, including mechanical failure, pilot error, or other factors. The Boone County Sheriff’s Department and the National Transportation Safety Board are also assisting in the investigation. Officials confirmed there is no known connection between the pilot and the home near where the plane crashed.

McClung’s life was marked by decades of experience in Rockford and surrounding areas, though it was also surrounded by serious controversies. He appeared on the Illinois State Police Offender Registry as a lifetime registrant following a 2007 charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving a six-year-old victim. In addition, a civil lawsuit filed in January 2025 alleged abuse of an 8-year-old girl connected to his role in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he served as second counselor to the bishop. McClung disputed the civil lawsuit in June 2025, arguing that the plaintiff lacked sufficient knowledge to support the claims.

Despite these difficult chapters, the focus remains on the plane crash that ended his life. Aviation accidents involving small aircraft are sudden and often leave communities seeking answers. McClung, at 83, had lived through decades of personal and public challenges, and his life was ultimately cut short by the unpredictability of flight.

The impact of the crash has been felt throughout Rockford and Poplar Grove, as neighbors and local residents process the sudden loss. Investigators and emergency responders continue to work carefully to determine how the accident occurred, emphasizing safety measures and protocols that may help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

While Richard McClung’s past includes controversial and complex elements, his death serves as a stark reminder of life’s fragility and unpredictability. The Boone County Coroner’s Office, law enforcement, and federal agencies are committed to providing clarity about the crash, offering closure to the communities involved. The tragedy underscores the importance of cherishing every moment while navigating the uncertainties of life.
