38-year-old Reynaldo Villanueva Fatally Struck by Metrolink Train in Sun Valley

SUN VALLEY, Calif. — Authorities have identified the man who was struck and killed by a Metrolink train late Wednesday night in Sun Valley. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Friday that the victim was Reynaldo Villanueva, a 38-year-old man. The tragic incident is now under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.

According to police, officers were called to the area of 9377 San Fernando Road near Sheldon Street at approximately 11:55 p.m. Wednesday after reports of a collision involving a train and a pedestrian. When officers arrived, they secured the scene and began gathering information from witnesses who were nearby at the time of the incident.

Preliminary information provided by witnesses indicated that Villanueva was on the railroad tracks when he was struck by a southbound Metrolink train, an LAPD officer told City News Service. It remains unclear why Villanueva was on the tracks or how long he had been there before the train approached. Investigators have not released details about whether the train’s operator attempted to stop or sound a warning prior to the collision.

Paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department were dispatched to the scene shortly after police arrived. Despite their efforts, Villanueva was pronounced dead at the location due to the severity of his injuries. No other injuries were reported, and authorities have not indicated that any passengers or train personnel were harmed during the incident.

The LAPD Valley Traffic Division has taken over the investigation and is working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal collision. Investigators are reviewing witness statements, examining the scene, and may also analyze surveillance footage or train data to better understand what happened in the moments leading up to the crash. Officials have not stated whether foul play or impairment is suspected.

The death has drawn attention to the dangers of being on or near active railroad tracks, especially during nighttime hours when visibility is reduced. Authorities continue to urge the public to stay clear of train tracks at all times and to use designated crossings. As the investigation continues, officials say additional information may be released once more details are confirmed.
