Two 18-Year-Olds Arrested in Halloween Night Shooting That Killed Omaha Teen

OMAHA, Neb. — Two young men have been arrested in connection with the tragic Halloween night shooting that claimed the life of 17-year-old Sevyn Bellar-White, a beloved Millard North High School student. The Omaha Police Department (OPD) announced Thursday that 18-year-old Rayquan Bass and 18-year-old Yourhansay Gonzales-Washington were taken into custody in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Wednesday after an intensive, multi-agency investigation.

Police said both suspects were initially booked into the Pottawattamie County Jail before being transferred to Omaha authorities. Bass faces charges of second-degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony, and possession of a defaced firearm. Gonzales-Washington is charged with possession of a defaced firearm, tampering with physical evidence, and accessory to a felony.

The arrests stem from a shooting that occurred shortly before midnight on October 31 near 36th and Polk Streets in South Omaha. Officers responded to reports of a person down outside a home where a Halloween party was being held. When they arrived, they found Bellar-White suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, but despite extensive efforts, he was pronounced dead.

Bellar-White’s death has deeply shaken the Millard North High School community. A senior known for his charisma and kindness, Sevyn was admired by peers and teachers alike. Vigils and memorials have been organized at the school, with counselors available to help students and staff process their grief. “He had a bright future ahead,” one classmate said. “It’s heartbreaking that his life was taken so soon.”

According to OPD investigators, the arrests followed days of relentless work — gathering witness statements, reviewing surveillance footage, and coordinating across jurisdictions. Authorities credit the teamwork between Omaha and Council Bluffs law enforcement for swiftly tracking down the suspects. While the arrests mark a major development, detectives say the case remains active and ongoing, with additional details expected as evidence continues to be reviewed.

Community members and local leaders have expressed deep sorrow over the violence that ended a young life on a night meant for celebration. Police are urging anyone with information to contact the Omaha Police Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. As Omaha mourns Sevyn Bellar-White, officials stress the importance of unity, vigilance, and addressing the roots of violence to prevent future tragedies.
