ROSWELL, N.M. — A 53-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a woman he was in an on-and-off relationship with. The tragic incident occurred Tuesday night, July 1, at a residence in southeast Roswell, leaving the community in shock.
According to the Roswell Police Department (RPD), Paul Sedillo-Reyes was charged with first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and felon in possession of a firearm after allegedly shooting and killing 46-year-old Nadia Madrid. Police say the shooting took place inside a home the two were sharing in the 1600 block of South Mulberry Avenue.
Sedillo-Reyes called 911 at approximately 9:25 p.m., claiming he found Madrid shot outside the home. When officers arrived, they discovered her lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders rushed her to a nearby hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The scene was immediately secured as investigators began working to uncover what had happened.
Detectives with RPD’s Criminal Investigations Division soon determined that the shooting likely took place inside the home, contradicting Sedillo-Reyes’ initial statement. During a search of the residence, investigators recovered two firearms believed to be linked to the shooting, along with other evidence that supported the conclusion that the fatal shots were fired indoors.
Sedillo-Reyes was initially detained at the scene for questioning. After executing a search warrant and collecting further evidence, police formally arrested him around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2. He was taken into custody and booked into the Chaves County Detention Center, where he remains as the investigation continues.
Authorities have not yet released details about a possible motive, but they confirmed that Sedillo-Reyes and Madrid were involved in a troubled, on-and-off relationship. Police are continuing to gather information, including interviews with witnesses and forensic analysis of the scene, to build a clearer picture of what led to the deadly shooting.
The case remains under active investigation, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Roswell Police Department. The tragic death of Nadia Madrid has once again brought attention to the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of early intervention in volatile relationships.
