VICKSBURG, Miss. — A large police presence was reported Saturday evening at the Commodore Apartments in Vicksburg following the death of a 24-year-old man, authorities said. The incident occurred on February 7 and drew concern from residents as emergency responders arrived at the scene. Officials later identified the deceased as Omar Muhammad, who was found unresponsive on the apartment complex property.
According to reports, 911 received a frantic call around 8:30 p.m. from two individuals who were described as highly emotional. The Vicksburg Police Department had an officer nearby who responded immediately to the call. Additional units were dispatched shortly after to assist and secure the area while authorities worked to determine what had happened.
Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey was called to the scene soon after police arrived. Huskey said Muhammad was pronounced deceased at the apartment complex. During his initial examination, the coroner noted there were no obvious signs of foul play, easing early concerns of a violent incident.
Huskey also stated that the deceased had reportedly been suffering from a severe cold prior to his death. While this information was shared as part of the preliminary findings, officials stressed that it is too early to determine whether the illness contributed to Muhammad’s passing. Investigators said additional medical review may be necessary.
Family members, including Muhammad’s grieving mother, were present at the scene as authorities conducted their investigation. Police worked to maintain order and privacy for the family while gathering information and speaking with those who may have been with him earlier in the day. The atmosphere at the complex was described as somber as neighbors looked on.
In similar cases, officials said an autopsy is often performed to determine the exact cause of death. At this time, the investigation remains ongoing, and no final conclusions have been released. Authorities said more information will be shared once the investigation is complete and all medical findings are reviewed.
