CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. — Authorities have identified the woman who was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning after her SUV struck a utility pole in Citrus Heights. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office confirmed Monday that the driver was Mia Miskic, 33, of Fair Oaks. The deadly crash happened during the early morning hours when visibility was severely limited due to fog.
According to the Citrus Heights Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 1:54 a.m. near the intersection of Greenback Lane and Dewey Drive. Officers were alerted to the incident after receiving an automated crash notification from Miskic’s SUV, prompting an immediate response to the scene.
When officers arrived, they found the vehicle had collided with a utility pole, causing significant damage. Police said Miskic was found unresponsive inside the SUV. Officers immediately began life-saving efforts until crews from Sacramento Metro Fire arrived and took over emergency care. Miskic was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, officials confirmed.
Traffic investigators with the Citrus Heights Police Department said preliminary information suggests alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. However, authorities emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing and that no final conclusions have been made. Investigators are continuing to review evidence from the scene, including vehicle data and roadway conditions.
Weather conditions may also have played a role. According to gauges from the National Weather Service, visibility in the area was reduced to about a quarter-mile at the time of the crash due to dense fog. Police noted that limited visibility can significantly increase the risk of serious crashes, especially during late-night and early-morning hours.
The roadway was impacted for a period of time as investigators documented the scene and ensured the area was safe. The Citrus Heights Police Department is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about events leading up to it to come forward. Those with information are urged to contact the department’s traffic unit at 916-727-5500. As the investigation continues, authorities are reminding drivers to avoid impaired driving and use extreme caution when traveling in poor visibility conditions.
