POWHATAN COUNTY, Va. — Authorities in Powhatan County say a deadly domestic incident over the weekend ended with a woman stabbed to death and her own son now facing serious criminal charges. The Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cody Travis Mulchi, who is accused of killing his mother, 52-year-old Melissa Ann Seamster.
Deputies were dispatched around 7:45 p.m. Saturday to a home in the 2000 block of Red Lane Road after receiving a report of a domestic assault. When officers arrived, they found Seamster suffering from multiple severe stab wounds. Deputies immediately began performing CPR in an attempt to save her life, but despite their efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators confirmed that Seamster was Mulchi’s mother. While authorities have not released details about what led up to the stabbing, they described the situation as a domestic incident involving family members. The violent attack has shocked the surrounding community, where neighbors say the area is usually quiet and peaceful.
A second victim, described as an adult male, was also injured during the incident. Officials said he sustained serious injuries and was airlifted by MedFlight helicopter to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. As of the latest update, the man remains hospitalized but is listed in stable condition and is expected to survive.
Following the stabbing, authorities say Mulchi fled the scene and went to a nearby residence. Deputies located him there shortly afterward, leading to a brief standoff. Law enforcement was able to take Mulchi into custody without further violence. He was transported to an area hospital for evaluation and later released into police custody.
Mulchi was then booked into the Pamunkey Regional Jail, where he is being held without bond. He faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder, malicious wounding or stabbing with intent to maim or kill, and assault and battery of a family or household member. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials say additional information will be released as it becomes available.
